The city is world famous for the production of Meissen porcelain. 
Meissen is famous  for the production of fine porcelain because of its rich supply 
of kaolin and a special type of clay. The porcelain produced in Meissen was the world's 
first high-quality porcelain made outside of China.
Meissen is often called the cradle of Saxony. After 1400, with its development, it rose to the center of all of Saxony. The biggest landmarks in the city today are from this period:
The Gothic Meissen Cathedral is dedicated to John the Theologian and St. Bishop Donatus. Construction of the cathedral began around 1250, on the site of an earlier Romanesque
basilica, and was completed in 1400, and its towers were only built in 1909.
According to Goethe, this cathedral is the best that the Gothic has left us. The choirs of the cathedral are decorated with sculptures of the patrons of the cathedral, John and Donatus, as well as the founders - Emperor Otto I and his wife Adelheid of Burgundy. It is assumed that these statues were created by sculptors of the school of the master from Naumburg, who left in the cathedral of this city magnificent images of psychological depth of the margrave and his wife Uta of Ballenstedt.
The first palace in Germany - the Albrechtsburg Castle, which is located on the high left bank of the Elbe, creates a unique skyline of Meissen.
